MD5 vs SHA vs Bcrypt: which hashing algorithm should you use?

MD5, SHA, or Bcrypt? Here's what each hashing algorithm actually does, where they differ, and which one to use for passwords, checksums, or data integrity.

You've probably seen these names thrown around in developer docs, security audits, or that one Stack Overflow answer from 2013 that everyone still links to: MD5, SHA, Bcrypt. They all do something related, they all "hash" data. But they're not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one for the wrong job is a real, documented way companies end up in a data breach headline.

Let's sort out what each one actually does, where they came from, and which one deserves a spot in your project.

What hashing actually does

A hash function takes any input, a password, a file, a sentence, and turns it into a fixed-length string of characters. Type "password123" into a hash function, and you get something like 482c811da5d5b4bc6d497ffa98491e38. Type an entire novel in, and you get a string the exact same length.

Two things matter here. First, hashing is one-way. You can't take the hash and reverse it back into the original input, at least not directly. Second, the same input always produces the same hash, and even a tiny change to the input (one character, one space) produces a completely different result.

That's the theory. In practice, not all hash functions are built for the same job, and that's where MD5, SHA, and Bcrypt start to look very different from each other.

MD5: fast, old, and no longer trustworthy for security

MD5 (Message Digest Algorithm 5) came out in 1992. For years, it was the default choice for checksums, password storage, and basically anything that needed a quick hash.

Then researchers found ways to break it. By 2004, cryptographers had demonstrated practical collision attacks, meaning they could find 2 different inputs that produce the same MD5 hash. By 2008, attackers were using these weaknesses in real-world exploits, including a forged SSL certificate. Today, MD5 is considered broken for any security-sensitive purpose.

Here's the thing though: MD5 isn't dead, it's just retired from the job it used to do. It's still commonly used for:

Checking if a downloaded file got corrupted (comparing checksums)
Quick data deduplication (spotting identical files without comparing every byte)
Non-security use cases where speed matters more than cryptographic strength

What MD5 should never touch: passwords, authentication tokens, or anything where an attacker gaining access matters. If you're building a login system in 2026 and reach for MD5, stop. There are far better options, and we're about to get to them.

SHA: the security-focused successor

SHA stands for Secure Hash Algorithm, and it actually refers to a family of algorithms, not just one. You'll run into a few versions:

SHA-1 came out in 1995 and was, for a long time, the go-to replacement for MD5's weaknesses. Then it suffered the same fate. In 2017, Google and CWI Amsterdam published a practical collision attack against SHA-1, effectively ending its use for security purposes. Most modern browsers and certificate authorities stopped trusting SHA-1 certificates years ago.

SHA-256 (part of the SHA-2 family) is where things get solid. It produces a 256-bit hash and, as of today, has no known practical vulnerabilities. It's the algorithm behind Bitcoin's proof-of-work system, it's used in TLS certificates, and it's a standard choice for file integrity verification and digital signatures.

SHA-512 is similar to SHA-256 but produces a longer, 512-bit hash. Slightly slower, marginally more resistant to certain theoretical attacks, but for most purposes, SHA-256 is already more than sufficient.

So where does SHA fit? It's excellent for:

Verifying file integrity (confirming a download wasn't tampered with)
Digital signatures and certificates
Blockchain and cryptographic applications
General-purpose hashing where speed and strong collision resistance both matter

Here's the catch, and it's an important one: SHA-256 is still too fast to be a good password hashing algorithm. That sounds backwards, but stick with it, because it's exactly why Bcrypt exists.

Why "fast" is bad news for password hashing

When you're checking file integrity, speed is a feature. You want to hash a large file and get a checksum back in milliseconds. Nobody's trying to break that hash through brute force, they're just confirming nothing got corrupted in transit.

Passwords are a completely different problem. If an attacker steals a database of hashed passwords, they're not trying to hash one password, they're trying to hash billions of guesses per second, checking each one against the stolen hash until something matches. This is called a brute-force attack, and it works terrifyingly well against fast hash functions.

A modern GPU can compute billions of SHA-256 hashes per second. That means a weak or common password, even hashed with a strong algorithm like SHA-256, can get cracked in minutes if the underlying algorithm isn't specifically designed to slow attackers down.

This is the exact problem Bcrypt was built to solve.

Bcrypt: deliberately, intentionally slow

Bcrypt showed up in 1999, designed specifically for password hashing, and it takes a completely different approach than MD5 or SHA.

Instead of optimizing for speed, Bcrypt optimizes for the opposite. It includes a "work factor" (sometimes called a cost factor) that controls exactly how computationally expensive each hash operation is. You can dial this up as hardware gets faster over time, keeping the algorithm slow relative to whatever computing power an attacker throws at it.

Bcrypt also automatically "salts" every hash, adding a random string to the password before hashing it. This matters more than people realize. Without salting, 2 users with the identical password ("Password1!", unfortunately still common) would produce the identical hash, and an attacker could precompute massive tables of common password hashes (called rainbow tables) to crack them instantly. Salting makes every hash unique, even for identical passwords, killing that shortcut entirely.

The result: even if an attacker steals your entire password database, cracking it takes drastically longer, often years longer, compared to a database hashed with plain SHA-256 or MD5.

Bcrypt (or similarly designed algorithms like Argon2 and scrypt) is the standard recommendation today for anyone storing user passwords. If you're building any kind of login system, this is where your password hashing budget should go.

Quick comparison

So which one should you actually use?

It depends entirely on what you're hashing and why.

Storing user passwords? Bcrypt, or a similarly purpose-built algorithm like Argon2. No exceptions, no "but it's just a small project" excuses. Weak password storage is one of the most common causes of major data breaches, and it's entirely preventable.

Verifying a file wasn't corrupted or tampered with? SHA-256 is the standard choice. Fast, reliable, no known practical weaknesses.

Quick internal deduplication or non-sensitive checksums? MD5 still works fine here. It's fast, and since nothing security-sensitive depends on it, its weaknesses don't matter for this specific job.

Building anything involving digital signatures, certificates, or blockchain? SHA-256 (or SHA-512 for extra margin) is the go-to.

Common mistakes worth avoiding

A few patterns show up again and again in security audits and breach postmortems:

Using MD5 or SHA-256 alone for password storage, without salting or a dedicated slow algorithm. This is still shockingly common in older codebases and quick prototypes that never got upgraded before launch.

Assuming "hashed" automatically means "secure." A hash is only as strong as the algorithm behind it and how it's implemented. MD5-hashed passwords are still crackable, sometimes in seconds for common passwords, because rainbow tables for MD5 are widely available online.

Reinventing password hashing instead of using established libraries. Nearly every modern programming language has a well-tested Bcrypt or Argon2 library. Use it. Writing your own hashing logic from scratch is one of those things that feels doable and usually isn't, cryptography is unforgiving of small mistakes.

FAQ

Is MD5 completely useless now? Not completely, just useless for anything security-related. It's still fine for quick file checksums or deduplication where nobody's actively trying to break it.

Can SHA-256 be cracked? Not through any known practical method today. Its weakness in password contexts isn't that it's "broken", it's that it's too fast, making brute-force attacks against weak passwords feasible even with a technically unbroken algorithm.

Is Bcrypt slower a problem for my application? For password hashing specifically, no. You're hashing one password at login time, a fraction of a second of extra computation is imperceptible to a real user, and that same slowness is what makes brute-forcing your database impractical for attackers.

What about Argon2, is it better than Bcrypt? Argon2 is newer and won the Password Hashing Competition in 2015, and many security experts now recommend it as the current best practice. Bcrypt remains widely used, well-tested, and perfectly solid, but if you're starting a new project today, Argon2 is worth serious consideration too.

The takeaway

Hashing isn't one tool for one job, it's 3 different tools built for 3 different priorities: MD5 for speed with no security stakes, SHA for strong general-purpose integrity checks, and Bcrypt for the one job that actually matters most to your users' safety, protecting their passwords.
